Her bid for election was successful, and Ms. Wright became the second Black person to serve on the Waterloo City Council. Willie Mae Wright was born in Goodman, Mississippi in 1932 and moved to Waterloo in 1955. She represented Waterloo’s Fourth and Sixth Wards on the City Council from 1982 to 1991. She is an active community member, having served in leadership positions in the Waterloo Women’s Civic Club, the Black Hawk County NAACP, the Boy Scouts of America, School PTAs, The Jesse Cosby Neighborhood Center, the Black Hawk-Bremer League of Women Voters, and many others.
