Highlights of the update include sightings of a Green-tailed Towhee, a Long-billed Curlew, Bewick's Wrens, Henslow's Sparrows, and Short-eared Owls. Also of note was the return of several species of shorebirds, including Lesser Yellowlegs, Piping Plovers, and several varieties of Sandpipers.
Spring migration, March 1-May 24, 1984, were field notes contributed by Peter C. Petersen, with nine other observers. Highlights were a Red-throated Loon at Cedar Lake and Greater Scaups at Goose Lake. A Pine Siskin at Fairmount Cemetery was seen carrying nesting material. Fred Lesher letter to Peter C. Petersen was regarding Bald Eagle nests, April 12, 1985. He was concerned that American Birds noted he reported nesting Bald Eagles in northeast Iowa when he had only reported that Bald Eagles had constructed a nest at Pool Slough near New Albin, with no eggs or young. He mentioned a map of another nest site that he and Darwin Koenig found near Wexford Creek. "Jim D." is noted in blue on the side of p. 2, and later James J. Dinsmore wrote letters explaining the nest confusion. This item was used as supporting documentation for the Iowa Ornithologists' Union Quarterly field report of summer 1984.
Field notes were contributed by Francis L. Moore, summer 1984, with four other observers. Among 47 species observed, many Little Blue Herons and Cattle Egrets were seen at Folsom Lake, with the first nesting evidence for Iowa. A Chestnut-sided Warbler was found singing in Grundy County and documented, a Black-necked Stilt was documented at Union Slough NWR, and a Great-tailed Grackle was documented at the IPL Cooling Ponds. Cuculidae were not very common, but Yellow-throated Vireos were in high numbers for southwest Iowa. Also of note were sightings of 48 Red-necked Phalaropes, numerous reports of Cattle Egrets, and a brief appearance of a Black-headed Grosbeak. In addition, several species of shorebirds and Ducks were also observed.
