Joyce Levingston’s Covid Mask from 2020 George Floyd Protests Item Info

Covid mask of light green fabric. Hand-made. Machine-stitched. “Breonna TAYLOR” handwritten in black felt-tip marker at center anterior.

Worn by Organizer Joyce Levingston during the 2020 George Floyd Protests in Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and the surrounding area. Levingston herself organized (with others) the May 29 march from Veterans Memorial Hall to Lincoln Park in Waterloo. Waterloo Courier photos depict Levingston wearing the mask at the June 6 vigil at Overman Park, Cedar Falls. Mask also worn at the June 20 march from Clay St. to Overman Park in Cedar Falls.

From donor Joyce Levingston:

“When I heard George Floyd call out to his momma knowing he was going to lose his life, my heart shattered. It was at that moment that I knew in my lifetime I had seen this happen too much to my own. After hearing about Breonna Taylor and seeing what happened to George Floyd and many others in my lifetime I looked at my three daughters and my son and decided we need to come together in our community for all of our voices to be heard and mourn together for once instead of us carrying the weight on our own. Rest in peace Breonna Taylor and rest in peace George Floyd.”
