- The Waterloo Defender, a weekly newspaper for the Black community, was published in Waterloo, Iowa, during the 1960s and 1970s. The publication, which covered news of interest to African Americans in Waterloo and beyond, carried the slogan "We will inform the public ... without fear or favor!" Issues in this collection range from 1966 to 1979. The last available issue, dated September 20, 1979, and titled simply The Defender, refers to a gap in coverage in its top story, "Back on the Streets Again." The issues in this collection are digitized versions of microfilm copies; microfilm reels of the Waterloo Defender also contain copies of the 1950s publications The Waterloo Post and The Waterloo Star.
