Vikki Brown’s T-Shirt from 2020 George Floyd Protests Item Info

Crew-necked short-sleeve t-shirt of white cotton. Machine-stitched. “WE WILL BE HEARD” printed in black at upper center anterior.

Worn by Black Hawk County Democrats Chairwoman Vikki Brown during the May 29, 2020 George Floyd Protest in Waterloo. The May 29 protest began with a march from Veterans Memorial Hall to Lincoln Park and concluded with speeches made in the park.
Brown grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and participated in the "Children's Crusade" (May 2-3, 1963) when she was 11 years old. She was personally acquainted with one of the victims of the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing (September 15, 1963).

From donor Vikki Brown:

“The civil rights movement in the south was very unstable during the Jim Crow era of the 1950s and 1960s; and at times it was also violent. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama during that era as a little girl, I felt compelled to participate on the right side of history as a Child Crusader. Fearing for our safety, my mother wouldn’t allow me nor my sisters to go near the chaos, but in 1963 at the age of 11 I sneaked down with classmates and marched against injustice. The ugliness hit close to home when a neighborhood acquaintance, also 11 years old, lost her life in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in September of that same year. Today, 57 years later I still continue with a vision on the right side of history. I have always, and I will continue to have a personal commitment to making a positive difference and impact in my community far and wide.”
