Vikki Brown’s Speech from 2020 George Floyd Protest Item Info

Printed email (2 pages) sent from Vikki Brown to Nicholas Erickson on October 30, 2020. Email contains speech delivered by Brown on Tuesday October 14th in front of the Waterloo Police Department.

Vikki Brown is the Chairwoman for the Black Hawk County Democrats. In 2020 she helped organize several of the perhaps one dozen protests held in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. The October 14 protest was one of the last held that year. It began with a march from Lincoln Park to the Waterloo Police Department, and concluded with speeches made in the parking lot. Other Speakers included Waterloo Mayor Quentin Hart, Waterloo Chief of Police Dr. Joel Fitzgerald, Organizer Joyce Levingston, and Organizer Nia Wilder.

From donor Vikki Brown:

“The civil rights movement in the south was very unstable during the Jim Crow era of the 1950s and 1960s; and at times it was also violent. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama during that era as a little girl, I felt compelled to participate on the right side of history as a Child Crusader. Fearing for our safety, my mother wouldn’t allow me nor my sisters to go near the chaos, but in 1963 at the age of 11 I sneaked down with classmates and marched against injustice. The ugliness hit close to home when a neighborhood acquaintance, also 11 years old, lost her life in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in September of that same year. Today, 57 years later I still continue with a vision on the right side of history. I have always, and I will continue to have a personal commitment to making a positive difference and impact in my community far and wide.”
