Nia Wilder’s Ballcap from George Floyd Protests Item Info

Ballcap of khaki cotton. Machine-stitched. Stylized letter “B” inside a lightbulb machine-embroidered in red thread at cap’s frontispiece.

Graphic (Meant to be interpreted as the imperative: “Be light.”) is the personal brand of local businessowner Nia “ShinDigg” Wilder. Pieces featuring the brand are commonly referred to as “Light Gear.” Wilder was a major organizer among Waterloo’s African-American community during the 2020 George Floyd Protests. Wilder sold/distributed “light gear” widely in 2020 and such pieces were commonly seen at local social justice events that year. Wilder was elected Ward 3 Waterloo City Councilperson in 2022.

From donor Nia “ShinDigg” Wilder:

“Connecting to the Black Lives Matter Movement is more than just marching and protesting. To me, “Black Lives Matter” is ensuring that every Black Life understands how important they are and understands their role in making sure our community thrives. My mission with “Be Light” gear is to remind you WHO you are and WHY you are. Bringing Light into the community is my way of projecting something positive and owning that we all bare something in common, we all have a PURPOSE. BLACK LIVES MATTER!”
