Sean Berg Protest Sign From 2020 George Floyd Protests Item Info

Wood cut print in black ink on white cardstock. Image at anterior depicts a prisoner holding a protest sign. “‘When A Man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.’ —MANDELA—” handwritten in purple and red felt-tip marker. "BLACK LIVES MATTER" handwritten in black felt-tip marker at posterior.

Used at the May 29 march from Veterans Memorial Hall to Lincoln Park in Waterloo and at the June 6 “Silent Vigil in Solidarity with BLM” held in Overman Park in Cedar Falls.

Artist’s statement:
"I handed out, between C.F. Vigil for Floyd and Waterloo march, roughly 150 posters. Each poster is a woodcut print, made by myself, w/ a different handwritten message on each print to help inform the public about racial disparity/inequality in Iowa/America. I was only able to track down 21 of the originals, as I handed out every print free to strangers and other people I do not have direct contact with at all. The signs/prints (original art on the one side w/ BLACK LIVES MATTER wrote [sic] on the reverse side) were held by marchers/protestors, so they have come full circle from myself (the artist) to the people (protestors/citizens) then back to me, and lastly to you all at the Grout Museum for archival and historical purposes . . . very cool."
