- Description:
- Hand-knit doll of black, blue, and white yarn. 14” tall. Made by Mrs. Lily Furgerson of Waterloo in 1944 and presented that year to 8-year-old Diane Broessel, also of Waterloo. Furgerson was married to Dr. Lee B. Furgerson, MD, Waterloo’s second black physician. He began his practice in Waterloo in 1927. His wife made dolls for his child patients and this one was given to Broessel, who was suffering from rheumatic fever. The Broessel family were among Dr. Furgerson’s white patients. After Dr. Furgerson’s death in 1948, Mrs. Furgerson pursued an education degree and became Waterloo’s first black schoolteacher in 1952. She taught fourth through sixth grade for 19 years at Grant Elementary.
