Waterloo Progress, Volume 1, No. 4, June 5, 1958 Item Info

Black ink on white newsprint (4 pages)

From donor Jim Collison:
“I started publishing the Waterloo Progress with the May 15, 1958, issue. (I do not have a copy of the first issue.) The goal was to treat Negroes and Negro news fairly in a local newspaper serving the Waterloo community. I continued the Smitty’s Punches column in the Waterloo Progress.
I ceased publishing this newspaper after the fifth issue because the Waterloo Courier had spread the word to advertisers not to advertise in the Waterloo Progress. My memory is that the Courier started offering advertisers cut rates for not advertising in my new paper. When Russ Lowe (Advertising Director) told me this, I knew we had no chance to make a go of it.”
