Waterloo Star, Volume 1, No. 5, October 11, 1956 Item Info

Black ink on white newsprint (6 pages)

From donor Jim Collison:
“My involvement with the Waterloo Star was as a columnist. I wrote the Smitty’s Punches column under the pen name Wellington Smith, because at the time I was employed as a staff writer for the Waterloo Courier. If the editor or the publisher had known of my involvement with and advocacy of the “Negro cause” I would have been fired immediately. The first column (in the September 13, 1956, issue) carried this Editor’s note: “The author, who wishes to remain anonymous, will use as his by-line names of two Negro friends he once worked with – Smith, respected for his honesty and courage; Wellington, equally courageous and honest, remembered for his friendly cheerfulness.
It seems the Waterloo Star ceased publication with the 12th issue, certainly sometime in early 1957.”
